Ben Foster was first spotted by Sir Alex Ferguson while he was playing for Wrexham. He was currently on loan from Stoke City. Fergie was supposed to watch his son Darren in the LDV Vans Trophy Final in 2005. After watching Foster, Fergie then decided to move for the young England goalkeeper. Foster was then moved to Old Trafford at a transfer fee of 1 million pounds.
In July 2005, Foster was officially a Red Devil. He was then loaned to Watford to gain more playing time. While at Watford, he was often praised that one day he is going to be the best goalkeeper in the world.
Also at Watford, Foster was well known for his precise delivery with his long goal kicks. His imposing figure, confidence at high pressure and excellent shot stopping skills also stood out in his first full pro-season. His early highlights of his career is when he helped Watford to be promoted into the Premier League by beating Manchester United’s traditional rivals, Leeds United, 3-0 in the Championship play-off final.
Foster would then spent another season with Watford. In 2007-2008, Foster finally listed in the Manchester United squad, fighting for his spot under the goal with two other United’s goalkeeper, van der Sar and Kuszczak.
Tough talented as he is, Foster international career was spoilt by England’s failure to reach the Euro 2008 Championship. Chosen over Robinson and James, Ben Foster made one fatal blunder against Croatia that lead to the opening goal.
Despite his hard-ships, the media and general English public still believes that the talent in Ben Foster will eventually out-shine his mistakes in the past. And the young goalie will prove just that….
